What are Port Plates, and what are they for?
Port plates are ABS plastic covers for either the intake or exhaust ports of an engine.
For years Grant has been using rags or bits of cardboard to cover the ports of our engines either when they are in storage or if the engine is being worked on.
There are two consequences of something getting into the head that’s not supposed to be there:
- The engine runs with something in the combustion chamber, and the head and/or bottom end get damaged requiring an engine rebuild
- The engine has to be disassembled for the object to be removed
These are dire consequences for something that is easily avoidable.
As a rule, we don’t leave heads uncovered for longer than necessary.
The move to develop plastic Port Plates was motivated by
- As the golden era engines (D-series, B-series etc.) are getting harder to find, we are buying and storing spare engines for our project cars. We wanted to have these protected and look tidy.
- We wanted to have something pre-made in our trackside tool kit to put in place if we have to remove a manifold when working on a car away from the workshop.
